BLUE MOON AUDIO VX165＋MX080 (BOSE)

Since its debut in 2016, BLUE MOON AUDIO has been widely recognized for its superb sound quality and has established itself as a leading Japanese high-end speaker brand.

The VX165 is a 2-way speaker set with a 165mm woofer for the door and a 25mm tweeter. It delivers clear, natural sound like that of a musical instrument, a trait inherited from the flagship RX165 model. With both the delicate resolution expected from hi-fi speakers and powerful punch, it is a versatile speaker for a wide range of music genres.

The MX080 is a full-range speaker with an 80mm diameter. It is used in BOSE-equipped vehicles as the midrange speaker located near the door handle and also as a center speaker.

This inner baffle firmly holds the speaker unit basket, ensuring linear cone movement.

Although MDF is a commonly used material for inner baffles, we use a high-rigidity MDF variant called "Custom Wood" to achieve even greater stiffness.

For waterproofing, the baffle surface is thickly coated with black surfacer paint, and aluminum glass tape is applied inside. This tape also smooths the inner surface to improve airflow (rear pressure release) from the speaker.

The rear of the baffle is shaped with a taper, allowing air behind the cone to escape more easily. This reduces resistance during cone operation and results in a clearer sound.

Sound deadening (door vibration control) is an essential step in car audio installation.

The inner panel of the door has large service holes. If left open, air moves around to the reverse side as the speaker cone moves, cancelling out the sound waves and degrading the high and low frequency details—resulting in radio-like, low-quality sound.

Deadening the doors seals these holes, improving airtightness and preventing airflow between the front and back of the speaker. It also suppresses resonance (rattling) of the door panel caused by speaker vibrations, effectively turning the door into a rigid speaker enclosure for optimal performance.

In BOSE-equipped cars, a small midrange speaker is installed behind the door trim to cover mid frequencies. Since the speaker box for this midrange lies in the space between the inner panel and door trim, we apply sound deadening to the trim side as well.

To complement the powerful and crisp sound from the upgraded front speakers with rich low-end response, the rear speakers are modified to serve as subwoofers.

First, a custom-made low-pass filter is installed so that only low-frequency signals are delivered. The capacitors and coils used are of audio-grade quality.

Additionally, to construct a solid speaker box that won’t rattle even at high volumes, the same Russian-made vibration-damping material used in door deadening is applied. Furthermore, sound-absorbing materials are packed inside the box to suppress unwanted resonance.

In vehicles with standard audio, the 16cm speakers located in the rear seat back are replaced with BLUE MOON AUDIO VX Woofers, the same as the front speakers.

For BOSE-equipped vehicles, the system already includes a 20cm subwoofer unit. Replacing this with a similar-sized unit is not cost-effective, so we retain the OEM unit.

In both standard and BOSE-equipped models, the subwoofer box will be reinforced thoroughly.

First, to prevent the enclosure from rattling due to strong low-frequency vibrations, careful deadening is applied.
Since many reinforcement ribs run along the interior walls of the box, we cut vibration-damping material into narrow strips and apply them firmly.

Next, to suppress internal resonance, we pack the box with an appropriate amount of sound-absorbing cotton.

In the V3 plan, all in-car speakers are controlled using a DSP with a built-in amplifier.

In vehicles with the standard audio system, there are six total speakers: front 2-way and left/right rear speakers. All of these are driven by the DSP amplifier.
For BOSE-equipped models, there are a total of 11 speakers: center speaker, front 3-way, two rear subwoofers, and rear tray-mounted rear speakers. Among these, all speakers essential for sound staging—excluding the rear tray speakers—are driven by the DSP amp.

The equipment used is the Italian-made audison FORZA AF C8.14bit.
This DSP amplifier supports up to 14-channel DSP control and includes an 8-channel amplifier with 65W of output per channel.

In the standard audio configuration, 4 channels are assigned to the front 2-way speakers, and 2 channels to the rear speakers, using a total of 6 channels.
In the BOSE configuration, 1 channel is assigned to the center speaker, 6 channels to the front 3-way speakers, and 1 channel to the unified rear subwoofers, for a total of 8 channels.

The real value of a DSP lies in the ability to optimize the sound field through individual control of each channel.
We will tailor the system to your preferences by individually adjusting the frequency range, timing, and equalization of each speaker before delivery.

By extending the speaker cone outward and replacing the grille with a low-resistance type, optimal speaker performance conditions are achieved.

Unlike the single-layer inner baffle in the V1 plan, the outer baffle is constructed by layering multiple sheets, positioning the cone closer to the interior surface. This allows for more efficient sound wave transmission into the cabin.

In addition, we use the die-cast grille designed for the BLUE MOON AUDIO RX165 to create a luxurious look.
(Since this is our shop's custom installation, the grille included with the VX165 will be taken as a trade-in.)

For the same reason as the door speakers, exposing the tweeters allows for a clearer sound.
We fabricate a custom tweeter mount by modifying the factory tweeter cover.

The mount is finished in matte black, blending seamlessly with the interior while adding a stylish touch.
This also helps overcome the drawback of the factory tweeter’s slightly downward-facing angle, providing both aesthetic and acoustic benefits.
